David Charles Barrett is my grandad, he sadly passed away on Sunday 25th November 2012. I know that he was conscripted into the army probably around the late 40's and he was a part of the Green Jackets regiment, as a rifleman and later driving half-tanks (not sure if half-tanks is the right terminology but I'm sure that's what he told me!).
I found this website online and wondered if there is any way of finding out if this is the right regiment? I'm trying to write about his life for his funeral on Wednesday 12th December, so if this is the right regiment, I was wondering if anybody remembered him from back then? I just wondered if there was any information anybody could give me that I could write about for that time in his life?
Firstly, Condolences to you and your family on your loss.
The Regiment back in the war years, before almagamation would have been known as either 'The Rifle Brigade'(95th)- The KRRC (Kings Royal Rifle Corp)(60th) or The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 43rd and 52nd...they were the main three Regiments which made up the Greenjackets who were almalgamated in 1958 to form the Greenjacket Brigade, and then were named The Royal Green Jackets in 1966.
If you have any old Army records of your Grandads, then this might help pinpoint which regiment he served in.
See what you can find out and let us know, we will assist you as much as we can.
Thank you very much for getting back to me so quickly.
My uncle has found an old army card of some description which had the following:
Rank no. 22133335
Regiment Corps QWsKRRC
So it looks like he was in the Kings Royal Rifle Corp.
I know it's a long shot to find anybody that might have known him, or to find any information on his army days, but I thought it's worth a try as it would be nice to be able to say something about that time of his life.
Amanda - my sincere condolences on your loss - just so you know - the QW's refer to the Queens Westminsters which were a Territorial Army made up mostly from Londoners and Civil Service personell - this link may give you bit more information :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen's_Westminsters
just copy and paste!
The 1st Bn QW's were renamed 11th (Queen's Westminsters) Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps and the 2nd Bn QW's were renamed 12th (Queen's Westminsters) Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps inn 1941 and saw extensive service in WWII
