Can you tell me if the 60th Rifle Brigade was a parent of the Royal Green Jackets? I ask because my one of my forebears, William Smellie, was in the 60th and fought in the Peninsula Wars and at Waterloo. If the Royal Green Jackets was indeed descended from the 60th I was hoping that there may be some record on my forebear in your archives.
Respectfully,
David Burns, Fairfax, Virginia Ex-Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and Queen's Own Highlanders.
Hello David, You are on the right track, the 60th Rifles were decendents of the 62 (Royal American) Foot which in later years became the KRR (Kings Royal Rifles) Then to the KRRC (Kings Royal Rifle Corps), Due to amalgamatiom of even more Regiments we became The Green Jackets, then, The Royal Green Jackets, We are all justly proud of our regiments as they were and what they have become. The Rifles. I think the KRRC Association would be the best place for your search, at krrcassn@hotmail .com Best regards, Geoff.
Geoff, thank you for your response. Do you know if there is anyone I could contact at the RJG museum, or another source, to find out if they have any information on my forebear?
At the time of the Cameronians disbandment we were all given the choice of transferring to any other regiment. I came very, very, close to asking to be re-assigned to the RJG - after serving in a rifle regiment my first instinct was to find another one, the RJG or the K.O.Y.L.I., in that order. Unfortunatley, before I could make the choice I was transferred to the Queen's Own Highlanders.
I have an email address for you at winchester Museum. curator@rgjmuseum.co.uk Give them as much information as you can and they will do their best to help you, There will be a small charge for the service but i am assured it is small. Regards Geoff.
