Just had a look at the Cyprus Photo: Sgt geordie Broughton. Cpl Hill, Spunky Newell, Joey Byrne, Willy Wilson, I am not to sure if Paddy Castle was 10 or 11 at the time. Were you not doing the boxing training up in Trodos.
One was Metal Mickey who you mentioned (who boxed really well) but the other was a big stocky lad. I think he was from London.
I'm not sure if either of them were in Cyprus with us in R Coy? I think Stevo had moved to 10 Pl by then? I seem to remember Metal turning up in Cambridge. Nice kid - and the other lad was pleasant too.
My son had a beer with Taff Sturley a few years back when he was on junior tac. It was one remembrance Sunday I think.
Does anybody remember the 'Box Factory Review'?
I've met Tommo a few times in the recent past and we were laughing our heads off over the antics of the blokes in Cyprus. Loved it.
Sorry Mick we are still trying to place you as you arrived about the same time as another kid with the same name.
I was 10 Pl Sgt around that time for a bit before I went to the Surveillance pl. Don't get too disheartened Mick. I saw a really close mate at a funeral last month who I have known for over 40 years and he had to ask me what my first name was!
If you can get a photo posted by the depweb I'm certain that one of the lads will recognise you.
I think Macker is right, their was 2 of them. Metal Micky 06 was the smaller of the two with a very square head ( sorry not to offend). And the other one was fairly chubby and hung around with Gus Mott. Or am i mixing them up with Geordie Slone, good lad, but did enjoy swamping the mattress.
God i will never forget all the spare weapon bits which went into the large square water tank before the SIB etc came to search the camp.
Does anyone remember the Spearhead recall exercise to Oakington Bks over a weekend. Getting telegrams and the police knocking on your door telling you to return to camp ASAP. The daily papers would have a field day if that happened today. Those were the days.
hello Macker i actually moved to 10 plt whilst we were at the box factory Cyprus 1980 you were plt sgt it was when i got busted for chining Rossy for sun bathing on stag it was unusual to get busted and still stay in same company but i think the football team could,nt manage without me..........lol....
Yes I remember now. I wish you would have kept the script you wrote for that rhyme the lads had to say on the Box Factory review when they were all on 'office'. I couldn't keep a straight face.
And the SIB were supposed to be looking for weapons - inside the bloke's cheque books.
Still - they always said - 'If you don''t want to catch the culprits call in the SIB...they'll solve every crime but the one they got called in for'...
how you doing bud i remember you being called mess tin head metal mickey etc and i remember you pulling the stings out of scorpions in cyprus and when dean welling was asleep in his sleeping bag on the beach before we got to go home and woke up one morning with a big rattle snake round his feet and only you would get it out i remember someone wanted to shoot it but we said no otherwise tomo would have gone barmy
